The state social services department is looking to make $17 million in federal funds available for childcare providers.
The money is intended to boost the capacity and affordability of daycares, which could alleviate the state's "childcare crisis."
Grants can be used to pay for the expansion or startup of a childcare center.
About 60 providers have applied for the funds, according to the Department of Social Services. Based on those applications, 2,400 openings could be created in 37 South Dakota communities.
The money comes from the American Rescue Plan Act, the federal stimulus package passed in 2021.
Applications are currently being reviewed by the state social services department. It could seek more applications depending on funding availability.
