Two of South Dakota's top Republicans are endorsing South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott in his bid for the White House.
Sen. John Thune and Sen. Mike Rounds are both backing Scott's newly announced presidential campaign.
Scott made his campaign official Monday morning in an announcement at Charleston Southern University in South Carolina.
In a statement, Rounds compared Scott to Ronald Reagan, saying he believes Scott is a leader who can unite the country.
"Tim’s involvement in getting the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act signed into law helped build a strong economy under the previous administration. I believe his forward-thinking approach would serve our nation well," Rounds said. "The last several years have clearly demonstrated that we need competent, conservative leadership in the White House."
Thune is also publicly backing Scott. Politico reports Thune is the highest-ranking congressional Republican to endorse Scott. Thune called Scott "the real deal," according to a CBS News report.
Scott is among a growing list of Republican candidates hoping to challenge Joe Biden in 2024. The latest polling from Morning Consult shows former President Donald Trump with a strong lead among Republican hopefuls.
