South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley joined 38 other attorneys general across the country asking Congress to pass the Combatting Illicit Xylazine Act.
Xylazine is a drug used by veterinarians to sedate and treat pain in animals like cattle and horses.
The CDC says it’s sometimes mixed in with opiates and fentanyl to enhance the drugs’ effects or increase street value by adding weight. This can be deadly for humans.
“Xylazine has started to be discovered in some fentanyl tests that have been conducted recently in South Dakota,” Jackley said. “That means this new threat has now reached our communities and our state.”
Minnesota is the only neighboring state to also voice support for this act. Other states include Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and others from around the country and including the District of Columbia.
