Bill expanding driving exceptions for those convicted of DUI advances

Brent Duerre

A legislative committee has advanced a bill expanding acceptable reasons to drive for a person convicted of driving under the influence.

HB 1083 allows those convicted of DUI to drive for health appointments, court or probation appointments, or to receive treatment and aftercare - though they would need a judge’s permission.

These would be added to existing allowed reasons including driving for work, school, child care, counseling programs and 24/7 sobriety testing.

The state Unified Judicial System supports the bill.

It received unanimous support from the House Transportation Committee Tuesday. It next heads to the House floor.
