The South Dakota secretary of state’s office says a group opposing new pipeline regulations has filed a petition to place the issue on the November ballet.
Lawmakers passed a bill this year in response to conflict over a proposed carbon sequestration pipeline.
The group opposing the bill cites issues with local control, property rights and safety concerns. They gathered signatures to refer the law, meaning South Dakota voters will have the final say. The Secretary of State still needs to validate the petition.
Proponents of the bill say it provides additional property rights and money for famers and counties. They say it’s the “only way forward” to support agricultural development.
Summit Carbon solution’s project was recently approved by the Iowa Utilities Board. The company says it plans to reapply in South Dakota.
