South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley opposes the Biden administration’s proposal to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.

The proposal would reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I drug to a Schedule III drug. If approved, this is seen as a step towards fully legalizing marijuana at the federal level.

Jackley along with 10 other Attorneys General submitted a public letter opposing the proposal.

Jackley says reclassification would harm states like South Dakota that haven’t legalized recreational cannabis – though he says the change would not impact the way local authorities enforce state law.

Medical marijuana is already legal in South Dakota. Legalizing recreational use of marijuana is being put before voters this November.

Jackley joined "In the Moment" for a deeper discussion on why he opposed the move.
