House panel defeats bill eliminating adult seat belt mandate

A legislative committee is rejecting a bill aiming to end mandatory seat belt use for adults in South Dakota.

The bill was sponsored by Clear Lake Republican Representative Dylan Jordan.

He said he survived a recent car crash due to wearing a seat belt. Despite that, he said requiring seat belt use is government overreach.

The bill saw extensive opposition testimony from health care professionals, first responders and crash survivors.

Highway Patrol Assistant Superintendent Robert Whisler said said the bill could cost South Dakota millions in federal highway dollars that are dependent on seat belt mandates.

The House Transportation Committee ultimately killed the bill Tuesday in a 10 to two vote.
