Bill prohibiting AI 'deepfakes' in elections advances

Lee Strubinger

A bill prohibiting “deepfakes” – or realistic AI generated images, audio or video recordings of real people - to influence elections in South Dakota advances from committee.

Sen. Liz Larson is the bill’s primary sponsor. She called the new AI-generated technology quote “dangerous” in election processes.

If signed into law – individuals who develop deepfakes to injure candidates within 90 days of an election face a Class 1 misdemeanor.

SB 164 passes the House Judiciary Committee 13-0, and heads to the House floor.
