Lt. Gov. Larry Rhoden addresses the state Senate on Jan. 24, 2025.

Gov. Larry Rhoden says more needs to be done on property tax relief than was achieved the past three months during session.

The governor said his office plans to present a proposal to a legislative summer task force that addresses the issue quote “in a meaningful way.”

When asked if that means increasing taxes elsewhere, Rhoden said it’s on the table.

“Could be. I think there are a lot of different things we’re considering right now. But I think we want to present a bill that gives individual counties options, and that’s what’s important if you believe in local control,” Rhoden said. “Especially if you can come up with a concept and then lay it out for people as an option, and then they make decisions based on what’s best for their counties. So, that’s the concept we’re working toward.”

Currently, state and city governments collect sales taxes, while counties do not.

Rhoden said his goal is to find a new or alternative revenue source for relief and a county sales tax is an option.
