MOA between South Dakota Highway Patrol, ICE approved

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will assist US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, with cases in the state.

According to a release from Gov. Larry Rhoden’s office, the memorandum of agreement allows state troopers to help ICE apprehend those who “may pose a risk to public safety in South Dakota.”

"I am grateful for the Trump Administration’s quick turnaround in approving our request so that we can keep our state and nation strong, safe, and free,” Rhoden said.

A spokesperson for the governor said the partnership will focus on serving cases within South Dakota.

According to the agreement, highway patrol must complete mandatory training before working with ICE officers.

The MOA will remain in effect until either the state or ICE terminates the agreement.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is the former governor of South Dakota and oversees ICE.

Last week, Attorney General Marty Jackley directed the Division of Criminal Investigation to seek a similar agreement with ICE.
