According to the US Customs and Border Protection, last month border crossings along the Southern border decreased 93% compared to last year.
South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson said it’s a win for the Trump administration, but he said there’s more to do.
US Representative Dusty Johnson said “progress” is being made in border protection. He said it’s time to take a look at the immigration itself.
“It has been too easy to get here illegally, and too hard to get here legally for the last few years. Now the good news is we have restored operational control over the Southern border. It didn’t even take that long. It was a crisis for four years; we have that fixed. I think that gives us an opportunity to talk about solutions and going forward,” Johnson said. “But to me rule number one is make sure you don’t treat people who are here illegally better than you treat the people who waited in line and did everything right. Our current illegal immigration doesn’t work well, and we need to fix that. Once we’re doing right by the people who follow the rules, then I think we can talk about the people who did not follow the rules.”
He added there are a lot of plans in the works about what to do to fix what he calls the “broken” system, and Johnson hints that one place he’s looking is those with student visas.
“I do think in Donald Trump we’ve got somebody who is a policy entrepreneur in this space. He does have, I mean he really cared about the Southern border. And now that we have operational control over the Southern border he is increasingly turning his attention to, ‘Okay how do we fix the legal system?’” Johnson said. “And he, I was at the white House last week, and he said, ‘It is crazy that we bring the best and the brightest across the world to come and study in our Universities, and then when we’re done studying we kick them out.’ We make them go home. They make India great, they make China great, they make South Korea great. They could be making America even greater.”
Johnson added they discussed how to make America home to the quote “best and brightest who come here legally and work hard.”
