Nearly 200 new laws are set to take effect in South Dakota Tuesday, July 1.
The Legislature passed a total of 211 laws. Several had emergency clauses, meaning they took effect right away. Gov. Larry Rhoden vetoed two others.
Some of the new laws taking effect include:
- A law restricting access to “obscene” material in public libraries.
- A law prohibiting use of eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines.
- A law putting a three percent cap on owner-occupied property tax assessment growth.
- A law requiring US citizenship status be put on drivers licenses.
- A law requiring the acceptance of cash payment at school events.
The full list of laws is available on the Legislature's website.
