Gov. Rhoden takes questions during a press conference on Thursday, February 6.

Gov. Larry Rhoden is setting a special session date to decide the fate of a new men’s prison for Sept. 23.

In a letter to the Legislature Friday, Rhoden said the purpose of the session is to “consider and pass legislation” that gives the Department of Corrections a path forward.

A governor-appointed task force recently recommended a 1,500-bed facility in the Sioux Falls area with a price tag capped at $650 million.

It also recommended it to be built at a 100-year construction quality.

For the project to pass, it requires a two-third majority in both the House and the Senate due to the financial tag.

Gov. Rhoden said he “believes that we are in good shape to achieve that.”

Correction: An earlier version of this post erroneously reported the date of the special session on Sept. 25. It is actually Sept. 23.
