The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the south Dakota NewsMedia Association are releasing an updated version of the state’s Open Meeting Law Guide.

Jackley said the guide is designed to explain the state’s meeting laws.

“Open meeting laws create transparent government,” said Jackley. “This brochure provides guidelines to the media, government agencies, and the public.”

This year, the Legislature approved two changes to the state’s open meeting laws. One bill created an obligation for public bodies like school boards or city councils to annually review these laws. The other specified that electronic communications between a quorum of the public body constitutes an official meeting.

Both laws went into effect July 1.

A full version of the updated guide is available on the attorney general's website.
