Governor Larry Rhoden's office has released the plan for a new men’s prison. The plan is the subject of a special legislative session on September 23.
The five page document includes price comparisons between the state’s original Lincoln County site and the new location in Sioux Falls.
In a statement, Governor Larry Rhoden said, "This is a fiscally responsible plan that will give South Dakota a 100-year facility with necessary space to reform our corrections system."
The governor's office also released a comparison to a Nebraska prison proposal. The cost discrepancies between the two state prison projects came up during the prison task force proceedings.
Lawmakers will vote on the plan during the upcoming special session. Even with a $175 million dollar reduction in cost, this will be the most costly state funded project in South Dakota history.
