As the government shutdown continues into a second week, the standoff between Democrats and Republicans holds strong.
In a floor speech Monday, South Dakota Republican Sen. and majority leader John Thune continues pointing the finger at Democrats.
“Mr. President, we’re now in day six of the Democrats government shutdown. Day six – and I’m wondering what exactly Democrats think they’re gaining from all this," Thune said. "Mr. President, Democrats own this.”
However, Thune’s counterpart, New York Democratic minority leader Sen. Chuck Schumer points the finger right back.
“Senate Democrats returned to Washington ready to negotiate, we were ready to work with Republicans to reopen the government and end the healthcare crisis, but it takes two sides to have a negotiation," Schumer said. "This shutdown is all on Donald Trump’s shoulders.”
The crux of the debate in D.C. orbits health insurance for American citizens. It is unclear when the shutdown standoff will end.
