Bill allowing diabetic students to carry, use medication on school property advances

South Dakota Capitol Building

A bill that proponents say could one day save the lives of diabetic children in schools advances out of committee.

If passed, it allows diabetic students to carry and use their prescribed medication, such as insulin, on school properties. Currently the state allows similar provisions for conditions like asthma.

Students are required to keep a written statement from a physician or other health care provider on file to do so.

The bill received unanimous support in the House Health and Human Services Committee and advances to the House floor.
