South Dakota Humanities Council faces potential loss of all federal funding

On today's show...

The South Dakota Humanities Council receives federal funding appropriated by Congress and distributed by the National Endowment for the Humanities. This week, they learned all of their federal funding has been frozen by the Department of Government Efficiency.

The loss is a 73% cut to their budget. Christina Oey is executive director of the South Dakota Humanities Council and Stephen Williamson is the board chair. They discuss what the impacts of a permanent cut could be (1:00 to 19:46).

The council's 2025 Young Readers One Book is "Wings of an Eagle." The children's book tells the story of a South Dakotan Olympic gold medalist.

We revisit our September 2024 conversation with record-breaker Billy Mills (19:46 to 37:50). Mills will be back in Sioux Falls for the Beyond the Books Literary Festival.

Plus, the Ipso Gallery hosts Lucky Number, a high-stakes, lottery-style fundraiser show, this Friday. Gallery director Liz Heeren explains how the event works (37:50 to 49:21).
