Digging into the history & legacy of the Homestake Gold Mine

On today's show...

SDPB's Lee Strubinger spoke with artist Marty Two Bulls Jr. after he smudged the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in March.

We bring you his interview about azilya and the artistic engagement (1:00 to 16:08).

A new coffee table book explores the old Homestake Gold Mine through the stories of the people who worked there. Erin Woodward takes us into the pages of her book "The Price of Gold: Stories from the Homestake Gold Mine" (16:08 to 37:52).

Woodward and her co-creator, photographer Nick Hubbard, will hold book signings in May. On May 15, they'll be at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead. And on May 17, they'll be at Henry's Books in Spearfish.

Plus, after the mine's closing in 2002, it took on a second life as SURF. We learn about the mine's breakthroughs before and after the facility opened.

Kelly Kirk, director of the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitors Center, unpacks the area's scientific timeline (37:52 to 49:04).
