'The Founding Gifts' that created a cultural institution

On today's show...

The South Dakota Art Museum has created a special exhibit that showcases the gifts that created it. "The Founding Gifts" includes pieces from Harvey Dunn, Ben Reifel and SDPB's Diana Tollefson.

SDPB gets a tour of the gallery from people with connections to the gifts (1:10 to 28:03).

Taylor McKeown is the South Dakota Art Museum's curator of collections and exhibitions. Mark Stemwedel is an associate academic director and senior lecturer at South Dakota State University's School of Design.

Ron Volesky is a lawyer and former legislator. He knew Congressman Ben Reifel and discusses the importance of having Native American art pieces in the state's art museum.

Plus, Racing Magpie is celebrating 10 years of supporting Lakota arts and culture in the Black Hills (28:03 to 48:54).

Founders and co-directors Peter Strong and Mary Bordeaux share the organization's origins and purpose in the community. They discuss the power of having a Lakota-led organization supporting local artists.
