How Medicaid cuts, staffing costs and 'bad debt' impact rural health care

All Women Count, a CDC program in South Dakota that provides free preventive cancer screenings to eligible women experienced no interruption in services, in spite of a delay in federal funding.

We get an update from Sarah Quail with South Dakota's Department of Health (1:10-14:16).

Tim Rave, president and CEO of the South Dakota Association of Healthcare Organizations, checks in on the health of the state's rural health systems.

He says Medicaid expansion may have shrunk "bad debt" at small-town hospitals and explores how new Medicaid cuts may impact them (14:16-41:52).

Plus, Avera Health says it's seeing a trend in cancer patients asking for the antiparasitic ivermectin added to their treatment plan. Ivermectin is unproven for cancer treatment and could do active and serious harm.

Luis Rojas, M.D., is an Avera gynecologic oncologist in Sioux Falls. He discusses evidence-based cancer treatment. (41:52-49:16).
