South Dakota once sent liberal politicians to Washington. It all started with an ambitious political professor named George McGovern.

Marc Johnson is a political historian and a fellow at the Mansfield Center at the University of Montana. He wrote a chapter on "The Rise and Disappearance of Liberal South Dakota" in the book "The Liberal Heartland" (1:10-23:54).
