The Midwest wasn't untouched by slavery

On today's show...

The South Dakota Festival of Books is this week in Spearfish. We speak with two authors heading to the state's premier literary event.

Gail Blankenau is the author of "Journey to Freedom: Uncovering the Grayson Sisters' Escape from Nebraska Territory." The book tells the story of Celia and Eliza Grayson and their flight to freedom out of the Midwest.

Blankenau explores how their story complicates our national narrative of slavery—and where it was allowed to exist (1:10-40:05).

Plus, Ann Bausum unpacks the myths that persist after the Civil War. Her book is "White Lies: How the South Lost the Civil War, then Rewrote the History."

We discuss the symbols of the Confederacy and the messages they still send today (40:05-1:01:52).
