South Dakota stories for families and young readers

On today's show...

"In the Moment" helps kick off the South Dakota Festival of Books with a show dedicated to a few of the festival's children's authors.

Kyla Zhao explores the world of competitive chess in her book "May the Best Player Win."

The book discusses stress, performance anxiety and sexism in sports (1:10-18:48).

Then, Brittany Richman introduces us to South Dakota's first licensed female pilot: the ever-dynamic Nellie Zabel Willhite.

Richman takes us into her book "Dreams Take Flight." And she shares how she stumbled across Willhite's story (18:48-34:38).

Plus, Nancy Bo Flood sends us off with the work of the state's first poet laureate. We end the show with "Badger Clark: Poetry Wrangler" (18:48-49:39).

Lori Walsh is the host and senior producer of "In the Moment."
