South Dakota has always been a mainly rural state made up of farms, ranches and small towns held together by social institutions and individual access to various technologies, from centralized electrical service to broadband Internet. Far from living in the middle of nowhere, rural South Dakotans now connect with one another and the outside world regardless of location and relative distance.
