Instant Replay Review Could Be Coming Soon To State Basketball

High school boys basketball

As first reported on Monday evening by the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, athletic directors of South Dakota will discuss and vote on a floor proposal this week to add an instant replay review to the state basketball tournaments.

The subject of adding instant replay review was a heavy point of discussion after the ending to a semi-final game between Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Yankton a week-and-a-half ago.

The National Federation of State High School Associations currently allows for instant replay review in a state championship event – but on a limited basis. The only time it can be used is ‘to determine if a scored goal occurred at the expiration of the time in the fourth quarter or any overtime period, should be counted, and if so, determine if it is a two-pointer or three-point goal.’

This is the proposal that Athletic Directors of South Dakota will discuss and vote on this week during their conference in Pierre. Instead of coming from the Basketball Advisory, this proposal stems directly from the South Dakota High School Activities Association staff.

If the topic of instant replay review receives approval from the AD’s of the state’s member schools, it will then go to the SDHSAA Board of Directors where it will require two readings. From there, it could be implemented for the State Basketball Championships of next year (2020).

As noted earlier as well by multiple sources, a proposal to add instant replay review for the State Football Championships is also on the table.
