AJ Plitzuweit, the son of University of South Dakota head women’s basketball coach Dawn Plitzuweit, is transferring from Augustana University to USD.

The 2019 NSIC Freshman of the Year announced his decision on Thursday. This past season, he averaged 14.6 points a game along with an assist average of four per game for the Vikings.

In an interview with the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls, Plitzuweit mentioned the likelihood of Augutana University not being post-season eligible for his senior year of college, due to the program moving to Division 1.

“It would be really tough for me to stay at Augie, build a community around me and build a home, then leave my senior year,” said Plitzuweit. “I thought right now would be a good time to assess my options and see what’s best.”

AJ played both his junior and senior seasons of high school ball in Vermillion. His family moved to the community when his mom accepted the lead role with the Coyote women’s basketball team.

Throughout his two years of high school hoops in South Dakota, he scored a total of 1,238 points with more than 300 rebounds.

Plitzuweit also has a sister Lexi, who just finished her sophomore season this March with the Vermillion Tanagers girls’ basketball team.
