The Lakota Nation Invitational board has voted to cancel its annual event for this December, which includes the highly anticipated LNI basketball tournament.
“I’m saddened that we had to cancel this year, but we will be back bigger and better next year, the biggest concern was for our children, fans, officials, workers, and athletes,” said LNI Founder and Director Bryan Brewer.
The LNI board cited the recent increase in COVID-19 numbers in South Dakota as the main concern.
This December would have marked the 44th annual Lakota Nation Invitational – an event which started in 1976 on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
“We’ve already started making plans for the 2021 [Lakota Nation Invitational], with the addition of the new arena, LNI will be bigger and better,” said LNI Board President Chuck Wilson. “I just want everyone to be careful and safe during this tough period of time and extend my thanks to everyone.”
The Lakota Nation Invitational started as an eight-team basketball event. Since its inception, it has moved to Rapid City and now consists of a 32 high school basketball teams. Along with being a premiere basketball extravaganza in the state, it also includes other events that highlight South Dakota’s native culture.
