USF To Add Men's and Women's Wrestling In 2023

USF to add men's and women's wrestling

The University of Sioux Falls has announced that they’ll be adding both a men’s and women’s wrestling program, starting in the fall of 2023. USF previously had men’s wrestling, but in 2011 it was dropped.

USF Athletic Director Pam Gohl mentioned in a press release on Monday that given the popularity of the sport, this is an important move.

“We are thrilled to announce the return of men’s and the addition of women’s wrestling at USF. With wrestling’s popularity in the Midwest, we look forward to recruiting outstanding student-athletes to compete both at the regional and national level,” said Gohl. “Wrestlers train with a passion and resiliency that make them successful on and off the mat, so we think they will be a great fit and addition to our athletic department.”

Men’s wrestling will compete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in Division II, while women’s wrestling has yet to commit to a conference – due to the sports growth from year to year at the national level.

South Dakota also has a sanctioned division of high school girls wrestling. This winter it’ll enter its third season. With more colleges adding a women’s wrestling program, it’s currently at 115 teams around the nation, these are more opportunities that high school girl wrestlers will have to compete in the sport at the college level.
