2024 SDHSAA state volleyball, quarterfinal recap

The 2024 SDHSAA state volleyball tournaments began Thursday, November 21, from the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls.

Twelve teams punched their tickets to play in the semifinals on Friday night.

Class AA

No. 1 Harrisburg vs No. 8 Aberdeen Central 3-0 (25 16, 25-18, 25-14)

Gabi Zachariasen led the Tigers with 17 kills in the quarterfinal matchup. Josalyn Samuels contributed 27 assists, and Kennedy Kokenge led the defensive charge with 20 digs. The Golden Eagles were led by Alivia Miller, who recorded 14-kills in the match.

No. 4 O’Gorman defeated No. 5 Watertown 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-19)

The Knights kill leader in the quarterfinal round was Lauren Venenga with 11. Kyra Hermanson also contributed 33 assists for O’Gorman. On the Knights defensive side Tyla Mauney had 24 digs. For Watertown, Emery Thury had 14 kills and Grace Corey racked up 27 assits. Natalie Pearson led the Arrows in digs with 15.

No. 2 Sioux Falls Jefferson defeated No. 7 Brandon Valley 3-1 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-23)

Isabel Simmons and Emory Brosnahan led the Cavaliers with 17 kills each. Averi Schmitt recorded 48 assists, and she also led the team in digs as well with 23. Riley Fodness also had 22 digs on defense for Sioux Falls Jefferson. On the Brandon Valley side, Abby Gruber led the attack with 13 kills. Logan McGuire and Riya Sheley both recorded 18 assists, and Mya VanWesten had 31 digs for the Lynx.

No. 3 Sioux Falls Washington defeated No. 6 Sioux Falls Roosevelt 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10)

Kaelyn Snoozy led the Warriors with 22 kills. Cate Legel also attributed 19 kills for the squad. Emily Akkerman lit up the assists for Washington with 41, and Taryn Kirsch came up with 30 digs. Kaylee Evenson led Roosevelt with 14 kills. Kate Wiebesiek contributed 38 assists for the Rough Riders, while Katie Bleeker had 33 digs.

Class A

No. 8 Sioux Falls Christian defeated No. 1 Miller 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-11)

The Chargers were led by Brietta Tims on offense, who had 17 of the teams 38 kills. Addisen Barber recorded 28 assists, and Chloe Bosma led the defensive side with 26 digs. Aleah Schlechter and Kaihlyn Anderberg each supplied five kills for Miller in the match, while Jolie Palmer led the Rustlers in digs with ten.

No. 4 Dakota Valley defeated No. 5 Mt. Vernon/Plankinton 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-14)

Claire Munch led Dakota Valley in kills with 24. Samantha Kimbell also recorded 16 kills for the Panthers. Madelyn Munch contributed an impressive 46 assists and Samantha Kimbell led Dakota Valley on the defensive side with 25 digs. Mt. Vernon/Plankinton was led offensively by Reagan Rus, who had 19 kills, and Alyssa Johnson, who notched 31 assists. Defensively for the Titans, Alexis Hauge had 17 digs, while Madalyn Lorang, Alyssa Johnson, and Regan Rus had 16 digs.

No. 2 Hamlin defeated No. 7 Sioux Valley 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-15, 25-23)

Addie Steffensen and Addison Neuendorf combined for 39 kills in Hamlin’s quarterfinal victory. Steffensen with 20 and Neuendorf with 19. Issie Steffensen recorded 48 assists in the contest and a group of Chargers showed up in the digs category. For Sioux Valley, Kaedyn Sapp led the team with 18 kills, Machaela Gerasch had 19 assists, and Caitlin Russell contributed 16 digs.

No. 3 Dell Rapids defeated No. 6 Winner 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-11)

Madelynn Henry led Dell Rapids with 18 kills in the quarterfinal match. Her teammate Sophi Randall attributed 26 assists as well. The Quarriers also had 12 combined ace serves in the match. For Winner, Payton Sargent had six kills, while Gracie Root notched nine assists. Root also led the Warriors in digs with six.

Class B

No. 1 Chester Area defeated No. 8 Castlewood 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 25-13)

Chester Area’s Jacy Wolf and Emmerson Eppard combined for 21-kills in the match. Lily Van Hal led the Flyers in assists with 27, while Gracie Huntimer and Emmerson Eppard combined for 21-digs on the defensive side. Lily Jacobsen was the kills leader for Castlewood with five. Ciara Kjetland led the Warriors in digs with six.

No. 5 Burke defeated No. 4 Kadoka Area 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-13)

Kailee Frank and Emmie Housmann led the offensive charge for Burke. Frank with 14 kills and Hausmann with 13 kills. The assists leader for Burke was Emmy Spencer with 14. She also recorded 12 assists in the contest as well. Kyrie Matucha also had 13 assists for Burke. Bella Williams led Kadoka Area with 12 kills. Kassidee Williams led the Kougars with 19 assists, and Madisyn Nemecek and Makaylan Bonenberger each recorded nine digs.

No. 2 Warner defeated No. 7 Colman-Egan 3-2 (25-27, 25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13)

Warner was led offensively by Kyleigh Schopp, who had 23 kills. Reagan Wood recorded 20 assists and Jordyn Jensen contributed 23 digs for the Monarchs as well. For the Hawks of Colman-Egan, Brynlee Landis led the way with 16 kills. Kaylee Voelker had 25 of the teams 43 assists, and Elaina Rhode led the team in the digs category with 23.

No. 3 Hitchcock-Tulare defeated No. 6 Gayville-Volin 3-2 (18-25, 25-13, 25-21, 23-25, 15-7)

Katelyn Schroeder led Hitchcock-Tulare with 27 kills. Lila Jo Johnson had 32 assists for the Patriots as well. Defensively for Hitchcock-Tulare, Schroeder and Johnson also each had 23 digs. Cambree Hoekman of the Patriots led the team with 28 digs. For Gayville-Volin, Maia Achen had 22 kills, Britton Scheetz had 44 assists, and Jolie Westrum led the way with 21 digs.
