Pete Lien & Sons is donating nearly 23 acres of land to Rapid City — in part — to build an indoor sports complex for youth activities.
Mayor Jason Salamun made the announcement alongside representatives from The Rapid City Sports Commission, Black Hills Energy, and Pete Lien & Sons.
The money to build the complex, however, is not yet approved. Salamun says he plans to ask the Rapid City Common Council for at least $5 million out of the Vision Fund to support the project.
Salamun's announcement also included additional details on a natural gas power generation plant proposed on Deadwood Avenue.
The nine-megawatt, $280 million plant will be used to develop what he’s calling a "Catalyst District" that will help finance the sports complex.
The Catalyst District, a proposed tax increment financing district, is a five-mile corridor near Exit 55 at I-90 and runs south toward downtown.
