Healthcare organizations across South Dakota are using art in the healing process.
THE ART OF HEALING, a radio and online series by SDPB News Director Cara Hetland, is both a documentary and discussion series. The series airs during Dakota Digest Sept. 23-27 at 7:35am (6:35 MT) and 5:30pm (4:30 MT), and on the one-hour Dakota Midday program on Friday, Sept. 27, at Noon (11 MT). The SDPB Radio stories, along with extended interviews and slideshows, will be available on demand later this month at SDPB.org/ArtofHealing. Topics include:
• Architecture and Healing: New hospitals incorporate art in design, like the Avera Behavioral Health Building, the Sanford Children’s Castle, The Heart Hospital, and the Avera Cancer Institute.
• Writing and Healing: Writing workshops are being used to help veterans heal.
• Music and Healing: Chris Hill, with the South Dakota Symphony, uses music to help his wife, who is being treated for cancer.
• Art Therapy and Healing: Art programs are being incorporated into hospitals and care centers, while art on the walls encourages patients.
THE ART OF HEALING is supported by a grant from the South Dakota Humanities Council, an affiliate of the National Council on the Humanities.
