Safety officials are reopening interstates after a powerful winter storm forced much of southeastern South Dakota to a halt.
The Department of Transportation reopened Interstate 90 from Chamberlain to Mitchell Wednesday morning. The remaining portion still closed, from Mitchell to Sioux Falls, is expected to reopen by midday.
Interstate 29 from Sioux Falls to Brookings reopened Wednesday night, according to the Department of Transportation.
The interstates were closed Wednesday after a winter storm dumped more than a foot of snow in many places. Sioux Falls received 13 inches according to the National Weather Service. The highest total was reported in Lake Andes, which received 27 inches.
Driving conditions on many highways and rural roads remained poor Wednesday, according to the 511 road conditions map.
The NWS forecasts light snow in parts of eastern South Dakota Wednesday, though it is not expected to result in significant additional accumulation.
