South Dakota tourism saw an uptick in 2024.

New data from the state Department of Tourism shows South Dakota welcomed 14.9 million visitors last year, up 1.4 percent from the previous year.

That’s a record high for the state, according to the report released Wednesday.

Those visitors spent over $5 billion, up nearly three percent from 2023.

“We are thrilled with the industry’s steady growth, and these accomplishments reflect our ongoing efforts to market South Dakota across the globe,” said state Secretary of Tourism Jim Hagen. “We will continue our strategic efforts to promote South Dakota as a premier vacation destination.”

Tourism generated just under $400 million dollars in state and local tax revenue in 2024, according to the department, reducing the tax burden on South Dakota households by $1,105.
