Authorities say a man drowned while swimming at a popular swimming spot in the Black Hills.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said they received a report of a drowning at Hippie Hole Saturday evening. Searchers eventually found the body of a 23-year-old Box Elder man that night.

The man appeared to have gotten tangled in underwater debris. Investigators say alcohol was involved in the incident.

Several agencies, including the Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, Pennington County Search and Rescue and the South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to the incident.

Hippie Hole is a popular summer destination for swimming and cliff diving east of Keystone, but authorities say it can be dangerous as it’s difficult to get to. This makes it challenging for first responders during any sort of emergency.
