SDPB's Summer with the Symphony

SDPB’s Summer with the Symphony returns to bring you highlights from the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, and other orchestral delights. 

The series offers uninterrupted recordings of live performances, insights into the music’s history, and discoveries about the artists who create and perform it. 

Monday, June 3 

Antonin Dvořák – Suite Op. 98b A Major “American Suite” 

From the SDSO’s Music Unwound: American Roots concert, this suite includes Maestro Delta David Gier’s introduction and a banjo piece. 

Lakota Music Project Young Composers Academy Concert – Callista Baker, Maya Baca, Baylie Her Many Horses, Arieanna Steele 

Three pieces composed by indigenous high school composers from South Dakota. Performed by the SDSO and featuring introductions with internationally recognized composer Ted Wiprud and the students.

Theodore Wiprude – Wind of Many Voices 

Based on Wiprude’s travels throughout South Dakota, the SDSO premiered the original composition Wind of Many Voices in March 2019. Wiprud is the 2018-2019 Music Alive Composer-in-Residence for the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. 

Monday, June 24 

Antonin Dvořák – Cello Concerto in B minor, B. 191 (Op. 104), Final Movement 

Performed by the Black Hills Symphony Orchestra, featuring Boston Pops cellist William Rounds, who is originally from Rapid City.
