South Dakotans might be split on this year’s WNBA Finals as the Las Vegas Aces and Phoenix Mercury are set to tip off in a seven game series that begins Friday night. The Aces are coached by Becky Hammon, while the Mercury are coached by Nate Tibbetts. It’s west river versus east river, but on a national stage.

The state of South Dakota lost a good one last month with the passing of Denis ‘Deny’ Lather. Not only was he quick-witted, funny, and extremely sociable, but his knowledge of sports in the state and his passion for coaching – it’s obvious there can only ever be one Deny Lather.

Mitch Reed, the superintendent at Florence, was doing radio play-by-play for the Castlewood games on New Country KS93. His color commentator for Thursday and Saturday was Taven Sumner, a fourth grader from Florence. Not only is Taven (probably) the youngest broadcaster to ever call a state championship game, but he’s also blind.

Sioux Falls Christian gets their revenge against Hamlin in a rematch of the 2024 Class A Boys Basketball State Championships. The Chargers came out on top this time around, 61-51.

The 2025 SDHSAA state boys basketball tournaments wrapped up from Rapid City (AA), Sioux Falls (A), and Aberdeen (B) on Saturday. Brandon Valley, Sioux Falls Christian, and Castlewood won state championships.

For the first time since 2001, Castlewood has won a state boys basketball championship. The Warriors defeated Viborg-Hurley 52-31on Saturday night in Aberdeen to claim the title.

Sioux Falls Christian are wearing special T-shirts this weekend at the state tournament to support 2nd grader Forrest Murphy. Forrest is battling a rare and aggressive form of cancer, Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma.

Craig Mattick’s guest is a former Roosevelt Rough Rider who won state titles in basketball and volleyball, was South Dakota’s Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year, and became one of the first from the state to play Big Ten volleyball.
