Turtle Soup: Fifty Years of Ice Age Discovery in the Southern Black Hills
Chris Jass and Kelly Lubers host Turtle Soup with a presentation called Fifty Years of Ice Age Discovery in the South Black Hills.
The Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, SD, was discovered during construction excavation in the summer of 1974. Thanks to the support of members of the local community, the site evolved from a notable scientific discovery into a museum destination in the southern Black Hills. Today, we know that over 60 mammoths perished in the sinkhole trap, and work to reveal the Ice Age secrets of the site (and others) continues today. Join us as we explore the Ice Age past of the Black Hills, and hear about the history of one of the Black Hills' most unique museums.
Turtle Soup is a weekly lunch and learn program with revolving topics ranging from Indigenous Games of the Midwest presented by Travis Brave Heart to Art & Engineering being presented by Jon Keller of South Dakota Mines. Each presentation starts with lunch being served at 11:45 PM, followed by a presentation at 12 PM. The local non-profit Fork Real Café partners with The Journey Museum & Learning Center to provide two weekly varieties of soup including a vegetarian option. Immediately following the presentation, a discussion will be held regarding that topic.
