According to the USDA, South Dakota is the only state to report highly pathogenic avian influenza, or bird flu, in a commercial flock since early July.
The last reported detection is Aug. 28 with 55,400 birds affected by the outbreak.
Infected birds are euthanized to prevent further spread of the disease.
The outbreak is in Faulk County at a commercial turkey operation. The report marks the first confirmed case in the state since May.
An active control zone is in place in attempt to contain the bird flu.
