AAA predicts over 119,000 South Dakotans will travel over Memorial Day weekend, an 8% increase from last year.
Approximately 88.5% of travelers from the state will drive to their destinations, according to AAA.
Nationwide, 42.3 million people are anticipated to travel for the holiday.
“This is expected to be the third busiest Memorial Day weekend since 2000, when AAA started tracking holiday travel,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said in a press release.
The manager of public and government affairs for AAA in South Dakota, Shawn Steward, asked travelers to be safe by making sure their vehicles are prepared. He advised checking the tires and car battery before a road trip.
