State fire meteorologist expects busy wildfire season

June, July, and August are peak wildfire months for western South Dakota and the Black Hills. Darren Clabo is the state’s fire meteorologist. He recently developed his 2022 wildfire outlook.

“We’re in a tough situation just because of the drought conditions that we have been seeing over the past several months," said Clabo. "However, we know that late April into May and even into early June is the wettest time period in South Dakota. It’s wetter than any other time period during the year. We do expect to see some beneficial moisture over the next few weeks.”

Clabo says all signs are pointing to a drier and warmer-than-average year in South Dakota. That makes him think the state is in for a busy fire season.
