An evergreen tree at Falls Park in Sioux Falls serves as roost for songbirds in need of a place to stay warm

On an early morning trip to Falls Park in Sioux Falls, SDPB’s Lori Walsh discovered dozens of house sparrows roosting in one of the park’s evergreen trees.

To learn more about bird behavior in winter, she reached out to David Swanson, Ph.D., professor of biology at the University of South Dakota. He is the author of "Birder's Guide to South Dakota."

Lori Walsh is a special correspondent with SDPB and host of the "In the Moment" podcast.
