Shane Veenhof, a junior from Madison, won the ‘A’ boys 110m hurdles and 300m hurdles on Saturday at the 2025 SDHSAA state track and field meet in Sioux Falls.

Veenhof’s times of 14.38 in the 110 and 38.52 in the 300 were not only gold medal performances at this year’s meet, but it also broke the Madison school records set in 1970 by the great Don Larson in the two events. Larson’s Madison school record in the 110m hurdles was 14.4 and in the 300m hurdles was 39.2.

Larson, a member of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Hall of Fame, the United State Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame, went on to have a storied coaching career at North Dakota State in Fargo.

“I’ve been chasing that record the whole year, so breaking that is a surreal feeling,” said Veenhof after he broke the 110m hurdles record. “I’m proud of myself for that.”

Veenhof finished nearly a full half second ahead of second place finisher Donovan Rose from Sioux Valley in the 110 on Saturday. Veenhof mentioned how he keeps his focus on what he can control.

“I don’t really feel nothing, I’m just out there running and competing,” he said. “Donovan, he pushed me all year, it’s fun to have good competition.”

A couple hours later, lightning struck again as Veenhof captured the gold and broke the next school record in the 300m hurdles.

At the end of the day, Veenhof said it’s all about trusting the process.

“I trust in my ability, trust in my coaching, and trust in God, that’s really all it took,” he told.

Veenhof will be back next year as he looks to defend both hurdle titles.
