As billions of people around the globe stay at home in order to slow the spread of Sars-Co-V2, the novel coronavirus, humans are noticing the way the planet is responding. Today is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The global movement was launched in 1970 by a 25-year-old graduate student named Denis Hayes. We live in a very different world than we did in 1970.
For today's Earth Day we welcome a team from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Dr. James Stone is a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Mines. His career has focused on a variety of collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects dealing with sustainability and the environment. Heidi L. Sieverding is a research scientist who works with Dr. Stone and others on campus on environmental research, including agriculture, the impact of climate change, and many other areas. Matthew Phillips is a senior mechanical engineering and applied mathematics undergraduate student who is a member of the student organization Leadership, Environment, Activism, Protection, and the SDSM&T Sustainability Committee.
