The Old Fort Meade Museum will be hosting a living history event titled "Life at Camp Ruhlen 1878" on Saturday, August 23 & Sunday, August 24; hours on Saturday will be 9-5 and Sunday 9-12pm. The event will take place on the parade ground at Fort Meade across the street from the Old Fort Meade Museum. Living historians will be portraying the soldiers that established and built Fort Meade. They will be interpreting the life of the soldier of 1878 with tents and other equipment soldiers had. Visitors to the event will be able to interact with the living historians. The Old Fort Meade Museum will be open during the event with the normal admission fee.
Join Black Hills National Forest and BHPFA for a series of nature programs! Programs could involve hiking up to 2 miles on uneven terrain. Please come prepared with layers, closed-toed hiking shoes or boots, sun protection, water & snacks.
How does wildfire shape the land over time? On this hike, we’ll explore the role of fire in the Black Hills, both past and present, and how it influences the landscape, wildlife, and plant life. We will learn about fire’s role in ecosystem health, its impact on biodiversity, and how nature recovers and thrives after a burn.
Join us at Henry’s Books in Spearfish on Saturday, August 23 from noon to 2 pm when we will host Dustie Clements for the signing of “South Dakota Night Sky,” an educational children’s book written by Clements with photographs by Grant Ekroth.
About the book...“South Dakota Night Sky” is a children's book about the night sky written by a South Dakotan, with photographs taken by a South Dakotan. Educational, fun, and beautiful, this book is intended to teach children about the night sky and introduce them to astronomy. Dedicated to the author’s nieces, nephews, and niblings, (a term for the nonbinary child of a sibling coined in 1951), “South Dakota Night Sky” is an educational book appropriate for children of all ages.
