Join us at the National Music Museum (NMM) on Saturday, August 2, for Discovery Saturday: Your Music, Your Voice. Admission and all activities are free for this special event!
Throughout the galleries, explore instruments and performers who have used music to express identity, share perspectives, and inspire change. Enjoy themed crafts and activities throughout the day. From 1:30 – 3:30 p.m., join us for our Open Mic event hosted by local musician Mike Hilson. Whether you're a seasoned performer or just starting out, we invite you to share your music on stage. Our 1901 Mason & Hamlin piano will be available for use—please bring any additional instruments you may need. Space is limited, so sign up early through our event page to reserve your spot or register the day of the event.
At 10:30 a.m., kick off your visit with Music Storytime! Anna Van Kley will read the NMM’s new children’s book about Arne Larson— the NMM’s founding collector—and how he used his voice and instruments to bring music to others. Kids will get to see and learn about real instruments featured in the story, now on display. This program is free and generously sponsored by the M.A. Everist Foundation.Discovery Saturdays are held on the first Saturday of each month and feature special programming, hands-on activities, and guided educational tours throughout the museum.

Families will see a short educational film about goats and then meet a goat that stops in for the event. There will also be crafts, a book-drawing and free take-home workbook with puzzles, games and info about goats. Refreshments will be served.

Join Rylan Sprague, (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe) an ethnobotanist who serves as chair of SURF’s Cultural Advisory Committee and Rochelle Zens (Rosebud Sioux Tribe) who leads the community relations office at SURF for a presentation on SURF’s ethnobotanical garden Changleska Wakhan, followed by a tour of the garden. The event begins at 5 p.m. at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center in Lead and concludes with the garden tour (weather depending). Transportation will be provided.

Join Black Hills National Forest and BHPFA for a series of nature programs! Programs could involve hiking up to 2 miles on uneven terrain. Please come prepared with layers, closed-toed hiking shoes or boots, sun protection, water & snacks.
How does wildfire shape the land over time? On this hike, we’ll explore the role of fire in the Black Hills, both past and present, and how it influences the landscape, wildlife, and plant life. We will learn about fire’s role in ecosystem health, its impact on biodiversity, and how nature recovers and thrives after a burn.
This fun run is to benefit the OneHeart campus and further our mission of empowering people to overcome crisis and achieve self-sustainability. All funds raised less expenses will be directed to the area of greatest need.
Get ready for an evening of high-adrenaline action at the McCrossan Boys Ranch Xtreme Event Challenge Rodeo, held in conjunction with the Northern Bull Riding Tour! Join us Saturday, August 23rd at the Leo P. Flynn Outdoor Arena for thrilling events including Bull Riding, Barrel Racing, and Mutton Busting. Cheer on top competitors as they compete for the title of Xtreme Event Challenge Champion. With an expected crowd of 2,500–3,000 spectators, this family-friendly event is one you won’t want to miss. All proceeds support the boys at McCrossan Boys Ranch, a place of hope and healing for youth facing life’s toughest challenges.
